Alex Dawson

Alex's relationship with Nikon began in 1999, when he purchased his first Nikon F90X and placed it in an underwater housing — a decision that same year earned him Rookie of the Year in the Swedish national championship of underwater photography, alongside a third-place finish. That early trust in Nikon has carried through more than two decades of increasingly demanding work in some of the world's most challenging underwater environments. Today, Alex shoots with the Nikon Z9 paired with the NIKKOR Z 14–24mm f/2.8 S, a combination chosen for its reliability, image quality, and the flexibility it offers in conditions where there is no margin for error. The Z9's robust construction is essential on expeditions into caves, wrecks, flooded mines, and cold-water environments, where equipment must perform without hesitation. Equally important to Alex is the exceptional dynamic range of Nikon RAW files: underwater scenes frequently present extreme contrast between powerful artificial lighting and deep shadow, and the latitude within each file allows him to recover detail while preserving the natural colour and atmosphere that make his images feel immersive rather than clinical. Combined with the optical quality of NIKKOR Z lenses, the system allows him to produce wide, sharp, and emotionally resonant images from environments that most people will never enter,  which is precisely the point.
