Try these tips and tricks to max the power of this compact and versatile telephoto zoom

Go abstract

Zooming in on a detail in a scene can create really interesting abstract images. Try it in a city where there are buildings with lots of textural surfaces and find parts where light hits in interesting ways.

Landscape isn’t just for wide-angles

Yes, wide-angle lenses are commonly used for landscape photography, but a zoom like the NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is pretty spectacular for outside shots, too. Nikon Ambassador Nigel Danson believes a telephoto zoom is a fantastic landscape tool for simplifying your images, using it to pick out a detail that matters and getting rid of surrounding complexity.

Bring your viewers into a scene

With a telephoto lens, you can make the best use of perspective compression to create images that can be really immersive. Try using the NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 at the 180 end to bring a background and foreground closer together to create some drama.

Get up close

Telephoto zooms such as the NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 aren’t just for shooting things far away. With a minimum focus distance of 0.27m at 70mm and 0.85m at 180mm and that f/2.8 aperture, you can create images with a macro-like feel. Try picking out an individual flower in a meadow or field.

Slap a TC-20 on it and shoot macro

When used with a TC-20, the native max reproduction ratio of 0.48x is doubled to become 0.96x which is almost macro, so almost life-size reproduction.

Portrait painting

The NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is great for portraits. Between 70mm and 180mm, you’ll find your own perfect portrait sweet spot (try it at around 85mm for a classic look) and you’ll also get great bokeh in your final results. Using a longer lens like this for portraiture also means you can be further away from your subject. Shooting portraits with a 35mm or a 50mm means getting up pretty close to the subject and can be off-putting if they aren’t used to being shot.

Make it your go to for ‘one lens’ days

If you’re invited to a wedding this summer or are going to a school sports day or even just a walk in the country, you don’t want to be carrying around a lot of gear. The NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is the perfect lens for such days out, giving you huge versatility in a compact, lightweight package.
